  • Heart Murmur

    Quick Reference

Reviewed by Brian R. Robinson, MD

A heart murmur is an abnormal sound made by the heart, and detected with a stethoscope. It may be aproblematic, or it may indicate a serious problem.

    Detailed Description

Many heart murmurs are aproblematic, have no symptoms, and are only detected by the doctor during a physical examination. If the murmur is indicative of something more serious, it may be accompanied by symptoms:

    • Fainting or light-headedness
    • Shortness of breath
    • Arrhythmias
    • Fatigue
    • or other signs associated with the underlying condition

Aproblematic murmurs may be caused by:

More serious murmurs may be caused by:

    Treatment

After detecting a murmur, minimally invasive tests will be ordered to help determine the underlying cause, if there is one. These tests might include an electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, holter electrocardiogram, chest x-ray or blood tests. If necessary, cardiac catheterization may be performed. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
